| Lametta: Below are packages with strands of lametta, which apparently is sometimes also called icicles or tinsel. The first one is the largest, being 13 x 34 cm high. The brand's name is "Swan Decorations" and on the box is also mentioned "Made in Wales". The other packages are approx. 10 x 27 cm or 7 x 29cm, and usually the text leaves no doubt as to their provenance, except for the second and third, where the front says "Silver Moss Tinsel" although they are made in Western Germany. East-German tinsel is made of aluminium and not traditional tinsel with a lead core ("Stanniol") because lead was too valuable a natural resource. Factories’ names in East Germany started with VEB, which stands for "Volkseigener Betrieb", i.e. "Factory owned by the people" (= literal translation) (ref. Frank Paul). Some have figures on the back, which can be cut out. |
